About Maple Ridge

Scenic Views & waterfront access

The first occupants of the Maple Ridge region were the Kwantlen First Nations. They lived in more than ten villages where they practiced traditional hunting and fishing.

Maple ridge derives its name from one of the early settlers. John Mclvor, a dairy farmer in the region, called it Maple Ridge in 1859 due to the large stands of maples in the ridge that divided his farm and the Fraser River.

Another famous early settler was Thomas Haney. He was originally from Ontario and moved to Maple Ridge in 1876. He established a brickworks business at the banks of the Fraser River and bought 60 acres of prime waterfront property. This area was called Haney's Landing. The first Haney house is among Maple Ridge's well-known historical heritage sites.

Maple Ridge was incorporated as BC's sixth municipality in 1874. The area was over 33000 acres but only had about 50 families. These families occupied the area in the early years of BC's gold rush. The Canadian Pacific Railway started operating in the area in 1885 and contributed greatly to the growth of Maple Ridge.

In 1915, a bridge was constructed over the Pitt River, which connected Maple Ridge with Vancouver. The bridge opened up the area for forestry and logging, which became an engine of growth for the region. This development attracted many French and Asian immigrants.
