About Vancouver, BC

Originally known as Granville, Vancouver was renamed after an English navigator George Vancouver, of the Royal Navy, who had surveyed the coast in 1792. The Canadian Pacific Railway chose the town to be the terminus of a transcontinental railway. It was incorporated as a city in April 1886. Two months after, Vancouver was devasted by a fire and was later rebuilt.

The city recovered and became a prosperous port with the help of the foundation of the Panama Canal in 1914, which made it economically possible to export lumber and grain from Vancouver to the east coast of the United States and Europe. By the 1930s, Vancouver had become the third most densely populated region in Canada. After World War 2, it advanced into the country's leading business center for trade with Asia and the Pacific Rim. Vancouver has long been a renowned destination for immigrants from overseas as well as other parts of Canada.

Situated among snow-capped mountains on an ocean inlet, Vancouver has one of the most charming settings of any city in the world. The city's proximity to the water and mountains results in constantly changing weather conditions. Its climate is characterized by mild, wet winters and moderately warm summers.

Vancouver is the commercial, industrial, and financial heart of British Columbia, with transportation and trade as the main components of its economy. It features Canada's largest deepwater port on Burrard Inlet that handles freighters, ferries and a fishing fleet.
